Background & Summary Stats

The Chapter Semester Report is sent out to all organizations in Black Greek Council, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and United Greek Council at the end of every semester with the purpose of collecting data about the chapters and collectively, the councils.

  • 73 chapters responded to the chapter semester report survey for Fall 2021
    • 5 Black Greek Council chapters
    • 25 Interfraternity Council chapters
    • 19 Panhellenic Council chapters
    • 24 United Greek Council chapters
    • 5,069 members total in reporting chapters

Philanthropy & Service

Philanthropy and community service are a foundational pillar of fraternities and sororities.

  • 235 philanthropic events were hosted in Spring 2022
  • Total service hours: 18,056 hours
  • Fraternity and sorority contributions to Illinithon: $6,999.11
  • Overall Greek philanthropic contribution in Spring 2022: $192,111.82
  • Council highlights:
    • Panhellenic Council Philanthropy Total: $109,751.15

Member Development Programming

Member development and member engagement are important to the relationships of members and their organizations.

  • 252 membership development programs coordinated in Spring 2022
    • Most common program topics: professional development & career readiness and leadership development.
    • Other programs: financial management, diversity and inclusion, etiquette, current social issues, and lifelong membership.
    • 80% of Black Greek Council chapters hosted leadership development programming.
    • 74% of Panhellenic Council chapters hosted programming events including Diversity and Inclusion topics.

Risk-Prevention Programming

Risk-prevention remains a top priority of fraternities and sororities on and off campus.

  • 213 risk-prevention programming events were hosted in Spring 2022
    • Alcohol Use, Sexual Assault Prevention, and Drug Use & Abuse were the most discussed topic programs.
    • Other programs including: Covid-19, eating disorders/body image, eating, mental health, and campus safety.
    • In the United Greek Council, 50% of chapters provided sexual assault program training to their members.
    • 44% of Interfraternity Council chapters had a risk-prevention program on drug use & abuse that they present to chapter members.

Chapter Recognition

Chapter recognition is an important component of chapter operations to ensure that members feel appreciated in their organizations.

  • 211 total strategies of chapter recognition were reported.
    • 79% of chapters incorporated recognition in chapter meetings as a member recognition strategy.
    • Other strategies used: public recognition, chapter points, mentorships, monetary incentives or scholarships, awards, and other rewards such as gift cards.
    • Over 70% of chapters in Black Greek Council and Panhellenic Council use public recognition as a way to recognize members who are going beyond expectations set in individual chapters.

Academics

  • Academic Programming: Academic programming events emphasize the importance of and offer strategies to achieve academic success.
    • 135 total academic programming events hosted
      • 60% of chapters hosted academic programming teaching time management.
      • Other programs: study skills and test taking.
      • Interfraternity Council has 64% of their chapters that teach members about time management and strategies.
  • Academic Resources: Fraternities and sororities work hard to ensure that they are providing their members with the necessary resources to excel academically.
    • 195 total academic resources were utilized in Spring 2022
      • 86% of chapters utilized chapter-designated study spaces.
      • Other resources utilized: reducing social privileges, creating personalized academic plans, offering subsidized tutoring and academic mentor programs.
      • The United Greek Council has 92% of chapters that designates chapter “study spots” for members to use to complete homework or other academic tasks.
  • Academic Recognition and Accountability: When asked about their scholarship plan, the organizations detailed their specific strategies they utilize to help strong performers continue to achieve, and to support members who are struggling.
    • Many chapters offer scholarships provided by the organizations’ nationals, as well as chapter-sponsored scholarships.
    • Other strategies used: incentivizing academic achievements with gift cards, study tables or groups, social media and chapter “shoutouts” for high achieving members, mentorship programs between active and new members, using chapter points as an academic incentive (e.g., GPA and A’s earned factoring into chapter points totals).
    • In the Panhellenic Council community, 79% of chapters reduce social privileges when holding members accountable for academics.
